Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve

Born at the height of the Great Depression, Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve grew up on the Rosebud Sioux reservation in South Dakota. Virginia is a notable author of Native American stories to promote cultural pride and knowledge for Native American children as well as to educate all children on Native American culture. A retired K-12 and college educator, she has been recognized nationally for her work, including receiving the National Humanities Medal in 2000 from President Clinton and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from South Dakota State University in 2008. She has published 27 books for all ages, as well as numerous short stories, articles, and poems. Sneve’s recent work includes a reissue of her children’s classic, The Christmas Coat, and a biography of her brother, Too Strong to Be Broken. Virginia is Lakota Sioux who has devoted her life to education and dispelling stereotypes. She is a highly revered elder.
