Helen Mock Johns

1917-2010

In addition to raising 7 children, one of whom has special needs, Helen Mock Johns was one of the founders of the Association for Retarded Children in Aberdeen, was a member of the South Dakota Special Olympics state board of directors, served as state president, and district chairman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, was state president of the American Legion Auxiliary, served as a board member of the Food Pantry, was a division leader of the Help Committee of the Salvation Army, presided as the first local president of the Right to Life, president of the St. Mary's Altar Society, and president of the St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary. Helen was a Red Cross disaster nurse, a nurse and volunteer for hospice, a patriotic instructor and cancer aid and research chairman for the local VFW Auxiliary, and hospital chairman for the South Dakota VFW Auxiliary. She was named Ambassador for South Dakota by Gov. Richard Kneip and was 1983 Outstanding Alumni at Presentation College. Her accomplishments go on and on. She believed that service to her community and country was an obligation of citizenship and she practiced it. And most devoted to her faith, Helen was a eucharistic minister at her church and served in that capacity at St. Luke's Hospital until she was over 90 years old.
