Her Vote. Her Voice. Purpose

The Her Vote. Her Voice. (HVHV) Centennial Delegation will commemorate the 100th anniversary of women’s rights to vote and the contributions of South Dakota suffragists while creating a legacy that will inspire future generations to contribute to history.

Campaign contributions, as well as legacy gifts to the Foundation’s endowment, raised through the HVHV centennial celebration will enable the South Dakota State Historical Society Foundation and the State Historical Society to collect and maintain our state’s history for future generations.

Our Projects

Our goal is to raise $1 million by January 2021 to support key South Dakota women’s history projects. Contributions to the HVHV campaign will offer support and resources to several state-wide projects.

Suffragist
Artifacts

In the current SD archives, we have very few artifacts of women’s influence on our state’s history. Main items include traditional kitchen materials and clothing. Women contributed to the home, their communities, businesses and so much more in diverse ways, but we’re missing the proof of their impact. Important moments of South Dakota women’s history are in danger of being forgotten. Your contribution will help us collect and properly preserve important artifacts that represent the impact of South Dakota women.

Oral
Histories

Funds raised through Her Vote. Her Voice. will kick off a three-year Oral History Project by the State Historical Society to research and professionally interview South Dakotans whose personal experiences will highlight important parts of our state’s history, with more than half of all interviewees being women in South Dakota.

Marketing &
Communication Efforts

HVHV will raise funds to increase its capacity to leverage technology to communicate, educate and share South Dakota’s history, as well as to connect with our state’s residents.

Awareness & Advocacy

Earning the right to vote gives everyone a right to have their voices be heard and the ability to be recognized. This shapes our state’s history every day. The funds raised will support efforts to build advocacy and awareness, giving the public opportunities to engage with history as they make an impact on their own communities.

Matching Endowment Gifts

In response to the increasing cost of preservation, an Endowment Fund has been established through the Historical Society Foundation to provide income in perpetuity and enable all HVHV matching campaign contributions to the endowment grow in value. These donations will help ensure we can collect, preserve and share South Dakota’s history for generations to come.
