José-Marie Griffiths

In 2015, Dakota State University hired the twenty-third president of DSU, José-Marie Griffiths, Ph.D.  Far from her birthplace in England, her illustrious career has taken her from University College London, where she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in computer sciences and statistics and holds a doctorate in information sciences and a bachelor’s degree in physics, to Washington, D.C., where she has held presidential appointments under four U.S. presidents over 24 years.

 José-Marie has spent her career in research, teaching, economic development, and higher education administration. Along the way, she has conducted grants or contracts with more than 28 federal agencies, in over 35 countries, including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, National Institute of Science and Technology, and NASA, as well as with more than a dozen Forbes 100 companies, including AT&T Bell Labs, IBM, Eastman Kodak, Johnson & Johnson, DuPont and Colgate-Palmolive.

She is a member of the Chamber’s Business Leadership Council, served as a delegate for the Her Vote. Her Voice. women’s history initiative and is involved in a number of civic groups around the region. José-Marie is currently leading a $90M initiative to grow the cyber research industry propelling South Dakota as a key contributor to national security and defense.
