Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (Zitkala-Ša/Red Bird ) was a Yankton Dakota writer, editor, educator, translator, musician, and political activist. She continuously worked for improvements in education, health care, and legal recognition of Native Americans as well as the preservation of Native American culture.

I decided that most people were going to make their drawing on white paper, and I wanted to be different so I drew mine on black so it would pop out of the page. My inspiration was to go with the choices I thought was right for the piece.
