HER VOTE. HER VOICE.

Celebration

The South Dakota Historical Society Foundation and State Historical Society took on a project to accelerate the preservation of women’s history. As we prepared for the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting women the right to vote, we realized how little women’s history we had preserved.

You can help with the Women’s History Initiative: Our goal is to raise $1 million. Donate now and help us commemorate the lives and legacies of South Dakota women. Click here to learn more and donate to the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation Women's History Initiative.

The success of this initiative  would not be possible without key partners.  We would like to thank First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard for their ongoing support.

HER VOTE. HER VOICE.

STILL FIGHTING.

Today, more than 430,000 South Dakota women have the right to vote because of the courageous suffragists who fought for equality. For over 72 years, they picketed, protested and stood up for what they believed in, battling societal barriers, harsh South Dakota winters and everything in between to ensure women have a voice. Today, the fight isn’t finished. Celebrating the centennial was a call-to-action to the generations of today to exercise their voting rights and let their voices be heard, counted and considered.

Her Vote. Her Voice. (HVHV) will lift up those who have come before us and provide a launchpad for the next generation to continue the charge and fight on.

“We would not have it written in the history of our state that any legislature had ever convened without our knocking at the door for suffrage.”

Preserving Women’s History

Commissioned by Governor Kristi Noem, the HVHV Women’s Vote Centennial Delegation worked with the South Dakota State Historical Society and the Historical Society Foundation to celebrate past successes while striving toward future goals. They aimed to elevate and preserve women’s history in our state so the legacy of the fearless suffragists on the frontline of change isn’t forgotten.

History might be lost if we don’t take action. Let’s do something about it.
